Florida Car Insurance

When registering a motor vehicle in the state of Florida, which is required, the owner or operator is required to have the ability to respond financially for damage done in any one accident resulting in $10,000. This amount of coverage is considered cheap insurance. In order to fulfill this requirement, an operator can self-insure themselves according to specific guidelines; or he or she can obtain a minimum coverage of $10,000 Personal Injury Protection Insurance, also called Florida No Fault Insurance, and a minimum coverage of $10,000 Property Damage Liability Insurance. The requirement can also be fulfilled by having a policy providing coverage of a minimum of $30,000 for combined bodily injury liability and property damage liability resulting from any one motor vehicle crash.

Personal Injury Protection covers the owner of the policy -- regardless of fault -- up to the limits of his or her policy.  Personal Injury Protection also covers members of an owner's family, the owner's children, and passengers in a motor vehicle who do not own a vehicle and do not have Personal Injury Protection. Because of the requirement to have Personal Injury Protection, it is usually fairly cheap insurance.  If it were not, Florida would have too many people without insurance because they can't afford it. Property Damage Liability covers damage costs to other people's property in a motor vehicle crash caused by a vehicle owner or members of his or her family.

In order to be applicable in Florida, insurance policies must be issued by a Florida insurance company which is licensed to sell insurance in Florida, or is a member of the Florida Insurance Guaranty Association.  Therefore, when someone moves to Florida, they can't keep their current insurance policy even if it is cheap insurance. Once insurance for a registered motor vehicle is obtained in Florida, the owner of the policy must keep their policy intact for the duration of their vehicle's registration or they forfeit their license and privilege to drive.

The owner of a motor vehicle may prove financial responsibility by providing evidence of holding a motor vehicle liability policy which is issued by an insurance carrier which is a member of the Florida Insurance Guaranty Association. Most insurance carriers which are members of this association provide some form of cheap insurance for the general public.  However, for more coverage, one must purchase a policy which covers a higher amount of damage.
