Illinois Car Insurance

In Illinois, the mandatory insurance law is a very important protection for consumers. In order to be in compliance with the mandatory insurance law in Illinois, a vehicle operator must possess vehicle liability insurance with a minimum of $20,000 to cover injury or death of one person in a motor vehicle accident, $40,000 to cover injury or death of more than one person in a motor vehicle accident, and $15,000 to cover any damage to another person's property.  This may not be considered cheap car insurance, but it is the law in Illinois to have these minimum amounts of liability insurance. Failure to comply with this law can result in the revocation of an operator's vehicle registration, and possibly their license to drive.

When a motor vehicle owner renews their vehicle's registration, they are required to sign the Vehicle Renewal Registration Application.  A signature on this application signifies a commitment to keep the motor vehicle insured throughout the duration of its registration.  Insurance companies are required to provide consumers with an insurance card or proof of insurance. A proof of insurance, whether it be cheap car insurance or not, must be kept in the vehicle at all times.  Failure to produce an insurance card when requested by a law enforcement officer can result in negative consequences. If convicted of driving uninsured in the state of Illinois, a vehicle's registration will be suspended and a minimum fine of $500 will be issued to the operator.

After a registration suspension, vehicle owners may find it difficult to purchase motor vehicle insurance at a reasonable price. Unfortunately, cheap car insurance is hard to find for those with bad driving records.  Auto insurance providers may also deny insurance to those with registration suspensions in their history.  If drivers cannot find an insurance agent who will insure them, they may apply for The Illinois Automobile Insurance Plan.  This plan was implemented for those who are unable to receive motor vehicle insurance in the voluntary market.  When applying for the plan, drivers must declare and certify that in the past 60 days they have tried to obtain automobile insurance, but have failed.  They also must prove that they have not been able to receive insurance at rates not exceeding those applicable using The Illinois Automobile Insurance Plan.
